മലയാളത്തെ ക്ളാസിക്കല്‍ ഭാഷയായി അംഗീകരിക്കണം എന്ന മുറവിളി കേള്‍ക്കുമ്പോള്‍ മനസ്സില്‍ ഉയരുന്ന ഒരു ചോദ്യമുണ്ട്‌ - ഏതു മലയാളം? ചന്തുമേനോന്‍, സി വി രാമന്‍പിള്ള തുടങ്ങിയവരിലും കവിത്രയത്തിലും വള്ളുവനാടന്‍, മയ്യഴി ശൈലിയും കടന്ന്‌ വാമൊഴിവഴക്കത്തിലും കെ ഇ എന്നില്‍ എത്തിനില്‍ക്കുന്ന ദുര്‍ഗ്രാഹ്യതയിലും ഞാന്‍ പരതുകയാണ്‌. ടിവി അവതാരകരുടേയും ഇംഗ്ളീഷ്‌ മീഡിയത്തില്‍ വളരുന്ന കുട്ടികളുടേയും മലയാളം എന്നെ കുഴക്കുന്നു. അങ്ങാടിയിലും കടപ്പുറത്തുമുള്ള തൊഴിലാളികളുടെ നാടന്‍ പ്രയോഗങ്ങള്‍ മലയാളമല്ലെന്നുവരുമോ? അതോ, പത്രത്തില്‍ അച്ചടിച്ചുവരുന്നതാണോ ശുദ്ധമലയാളം? ഏതുമലയാളമാണ്‌ ക്ളാസിക്കലാകുക? ആരുടെ പക്കലാണിതിണ്റ്റെ അളവുകോല്‍? അതിരിക്കട്ടെ, ഹിന്ദി ഒഴിച്ചാല്‍ പ്രാദേശികഭാഷകളില്‍ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല്‍ വായനക്കാരുണ്ടെന്ന്‌ ചില മലയാളപത്രങ്ങള്‍ മത്സരിച്ച്‌ കണക്കുകള്‍ നിരത്തുമ്പോള്‍ ഭാഷ മരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണോ? നേരോടെ, നേരത്തേ നേരറിയാന്‍ ലോകത്തെവിടെയും മലയാളികള്‍ ഉറക്കമൊഴിഞ്ഞു കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നത്‌ ഭാഷ മരിച്ചോ അതോ, ക്ളാസിക്കല്‍ പദവിയും അതോടൊപ്പമുള്ള കോടികളും നേടി മലയാളം രക്ഷപെട്ടോ എന്നറിയാനോ? നേരെന്തായാലും, 'ക്ളാസിക്കല്‍' എന്നതിണ്റ്റെ മലയാളം എന്താണ്‌ എന്ന്‌ ആരെങ്കിലും പറഞ്ഞുതരുമോ?

It is very sorry to say your comment on recognizing 'classical malayalam' is a mere misundestanding. Malayalam, as any other language needs to be recognized as classcal then only it could be flourished and developped. Take the example of Tamil, all the questions, you raised are also applicable to this 'classical language' also. But the tamilaiance never raise such a 'rude' and baseless comment on their language. Or What if we if Malayalam gets such a recognition.

Thanks for your interest. Believe me, I had by no means intended to belittle Malayalam or deny it a Classical stature. I only wanted to say that the present efforts towards it are only mere lip-service, rather political than sincere. As far as I know, Malayalam is of more recent origin than Sanskrit or Tamil.
A language lives through tradition passed on through generations. How many Malayalees of the present day can honestly claim that their children can read and write in Malayalam? The craze after English education and the ‘promise’ of greater opportunities of life have taken away from the next generation the ability to even talk fluently in Malayalam. How the girls who took part in the recent Beauty Queen of Kerala spoke Malayalam is the best example.
Already, Malayalam is a fantastic mixture of thousands of loan words from other languages, including Sanskrit. “Nee aa door lock cheyy, njaan ii letter post cheythittu marketil poyi fisho beefo vaangi varaam” is the present use of Malayalam. How can we save it through a classical status, or Malayalam University or a ‘chair’ for Malayalam?
